Are new hires bouncing before the coffee cools in their company mug?

Change is difficult, but you know what's harder? Standing still and letting change hit you like a train. Let's get into it. Three things some employers do that undermine workplace satisfaction, trust, security, and...well, you get the drift.

#1 MISLEADING JOB POSTINGS

Resilient, safe and secure workplaces start with people. One study, conducted by Pathrise showed that in 2024, job seekers apply an average of 294 times before landing a job.

Inflating perks & benefits is misleading to applicants and sets up new hires to feel betrayed, disappointed and resentful- before they even START.

Leading with transparency will lower costs associated with turnover, absenteeism, damaged relationships, brand reputation and potential fraud.

#2 ZERO COMMITMENT TO “ZERO TOLERANCE”

A “zero-tolerance” policy defines a clear reporting process, investigation timeline and tangible consequences for bullying & harassment.

More than ticking an HR box, the "zero tolerance" policy exists to protect workers. Allowing bullying and harassment to happen in the workplace means employees could develop symptoms of anxiety, depression, anger and even PTSD.

Please follow your dang policies to retain talent, avoid resentment and avoid costly OHS, ethical and legal nightmares.

#3 ANTI-SOCIAL MODELLING

Emotional contagion is when people unconsciously model another person’s emotions and behavioural cues. Like if one person complains or expresses anger, it can lead to others mirroring and amplifying that emotion.

As a leader, make sure your team is not modelling toxicity like:

> Micromanaging

> Forming cliques/excluding others

> Gossiping/rumours

> Passive-aggressiveness

> Taking credit for others’ work

Ensure all levels of your organization model PRO-SOCIAL behaviours, like respect and accountability for a loyal, resilient and successful team.

Hi I'm Jeni,

Since 2014, I've worked as a licenced Private Investigator and Security Consultant, with seasonal contract wild firefighting. In 2022, I shifted into Emergency Management, first as an Emergency Management Coordinator for Canadian Red Cross in NS, then as the Emergency Management Coordinator for Malahat Nation.

Resilience Lab is about accessible Security and Emergency Management design, language and implementation for communities, teams and organizations. My favourite thing is dusting off that binder with the standard 132-page “Emergency Plan” (Nobody reads this. Nobody.) and transforming the contents into a series of actionable, accessible steps that you can trust when you need them most.

I’m FireSmart certified. I'm a mom and a Nana. I enjoy comedy writing, collecting beach glass, theatre and volunteering with ESS.
